Reading allows us to be transported from our own world to another. Between the pages of a book, we can become immersed in the lives of fictional characters and learn about worlds and cultures entirely different from our own. Spending time reading has been pushed aside to concentrate on more academic studies in an ever-increasing busy world. And yet, developing a love of books is the very foundation, building blocks, that will enable a child to flourish in the future.

For many, reading has become a chore, and for children who are learning English as an additional language, it can often be an exercise of simply decoding words. Our Guided Reading courses enable a child not only to read a book but also to make sense of it and develop an understanding of what the author is trying to convey.

Guided Reading with children can help to create a love of reading for life. Multiple studies have found a correlation between reading for pleasure and higher achievement in every subject, not just English.

Reading a book relies on us using our imagination to picture characters, visualise their settings and environment, and guess what’s coming next. We must use our imagination if we are to learn about other people, places, events, and times. In turn, this developed imagination leads to greater creativity as children use the ideas in their heads to inform their work.

Finally, Guided Reading allows the child to be in the here and now, albeit for two hours a week, where they can relax and open their mind to a beautiful story, free from the distractions of everyday life. Guided Reading enables the child to become both interested and interesting!
